Wild cherry bark (prunus serotina) was one of the most treasured herbs of Native American Tribes and was used as a powerful cough suppressant. It is an excellent remedy for coughs, colds, sore throats and lung inflammation. It is used in many pharmaceutical cough syrups, but we make our own without all the nasty stuff!
Wild cherry bark has expectorant properties and works as an antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory. Its sedative action is helpful for easing the cough reflex and calming irritating coughs. A great herb to help ease breathing during colds & flu, respiratory infections, bronchitis and whooping cough. As a bronchodilator, it also helps ease asthma.
Wild cherry is a large tree in the rose family, and is found throughout much of the United States. The inner bark of the branches are harvested in mid summer and fall, dried and used in teas, syrups and tinctures.
We also added mullein and hibiscus to our syrup. Mullein leaves help to soothe and protect the membranes of the respiratory tract. Hibiscus is rich in vitamin C and is a natural immune booster.
